Dark Elf - WIP Update 4

posted by p1per
Heya!

Almost there!

I'm not allowed to post final pictures before the images have been approved by the jury of the contest I want to enter him but I got one last b/w WIP for you. :) I still have to cleanup some areas and if I manage to do and get one in time I will add a "companion" to the base. ;)

Say hello to Arne

posted by Hddvh
Welcome (back) to Miniature Fairy Tales!

I'm proud to present you our latest news around this new blog today. We're growing, like a real family.

Many of you may know me and my works from my "old" blog, Painters Delight, or numerous forums around the world wide web. For some weeks now, Nathelis, P1per and me are chatting mostly every day via Skype. Mostly about miniature painting. As time passed by we got to know each other more and more. Shortly after Nathelis and P1per launched this blog, I was interested in being a member. So... today I'm in and ready to share my WIP's, thoughts and finished showcase-projects with you.

Let me introduce you myself... just for those who didn't knew me by now ;)

My name is Arne. I'm aged 28 for some days now and live together with my wife and 2 kids near Hamburg. My painting-biography is rather short as I'm back into this hobby for just a few years now. Back the days I was playing Warhammer and Confrontation. Painting miniatures was more or less a necessity instead of a joy. Some other hobbies and, of course, the growing interest in girls let me quit this path to have more free time. 15 years later I started painting miniatures again. I never really stopped thinking about playing / painting again, but somehow there was always something more important than a new hobby for me. Back in 2010 I painted my first miniature after the restart. Today, 3 years later, I could show off a hand full of miniatures painted in a continuous growing showcase quality.

You'll find those works soon in our gallery. Feel free to take a closer look at those and watch out  for actual and upcoming projects on Fairy Tales Miniatures soon! Here's a small display of my latest works, made for the MV Bananalicious contest:

Dark Elf Base - WIP 2

Heya!

Just wanted to show a little progress on the base for my Dark Elf. It still needs more glazes for color variations as well as lights and shadows but here's how it looks right now.

Cat Stark base wip: Painting a stone wall

posted by Nathelis
Hi folks,

yesterday I painted the stone wall of Catelyns base. took some hours but i´m really satisfied how it turned out.

This is the palette (VMC) I used:

The trick in my opinion is a first lightness sketch of the wall, so that you have a zenithal light source (can be done via wet in wet sketch or AB) and then apply very thin layers of glazes to the single stones in different colors. So you get a natural variety of stone colors. This is how it looked after that steps:

After that every single stone needs to be shaded down (according to his position on the wall, so upper stones least) and then pure white can be used for highlights. To darken the recesses between the stones I used a black wash I applied carefully only to the areas where needed.

this is a time consuming work, but well worth it in the end!

Catelyn Stark with Base wip

posted by Nathelis
Hi folks,

today I was doing my favourite part about miniature painting: base building. Actually there wasn't a lot to do, since I found a good stone wall that i recently bought from Figone. It fits the mood and style of this miniature perfectly + also really nice the 28mm true scale. So this is the first impression of the miniature and the base together (both with just some color sketches). Now the real work (fun) begins!

keep on happy painting,

Dark Elf and Princess Update

posted by p1per
Heya!

As promised yesterday here's an update on my Dark Elfs base.

What happened: After adding some pva glue mixed with baking soda to create some grout almost all the definition and structure of the floor was gone. So it would have been a pain to paint and probably wouldn't look as good. Therefore I decided to re-do the whole base. :D

I didn't have another plinth in that particular size around so I had to modify the one I screwed up. First thing needed to was to get rid of the milliput. Not an easy task when it's already rock-hard. My choice fell on cutting off the upper part of the plinth and that's how it looked like after the operation:

My plan was to rebuild the plinth with plaster 'cause as you can see there wasn't much left of it. ;) In order to support the plaster and give it something to hold on to I drilled some holes in the plint and also glued some paper-clips in random places:

Now I cut out a form shaped like the plinth + wall from plasticcard and glued/fixed it onto the plinth. I thought I took some pictures of that step but it seems like I didn't or lost it - sry for that - but here's how the plinth looked after removing the plasticcards:

Fun part incoming... scratching alle the little stones in the plaster *yay*... not. After 1.5h the floor was done:

Moving onto the wall and stairs... another 2hours later I was finally done (I also added some damage and irregularities to the stones):

Last but not least (primed and basecoated):

...and now it's time to start painting it. ;)

One more thing - besides the base of my elf - I also did some rough sketching on the base of my Princess of Night:

Heya!

Had some trouble with the base for my Dark Elf so I re-did pretty much the whole thing but more on that topic tomorrow. ;)

But to keep you up2date what's been going on besides my Dark Elf, here's a very early WIP of my next project, Princess of Night from Nocturna.

Fair maiden Anna

Hi folks,

I am proud to present my present for Arne (Sleipnir).

This time I learned how to create an artificial waterfall.

This project is one of the most effort, as building the base was really difficult and it took countless hours to paint it!
